See more Tom L @RT84451299 Oct 1 Sator is the very definition of slow burn. 80% atmosphere with only vague hints at plot most of the way through, the filmmakers perhaps lean too heavily on subtlety. A family that lives out in the woods is afflicted variously with mental illness, dementia, and addiction. But are the fleeting disturbing glimpses merely hallucinations or something more? There are hints of Native American mythology, particularly the Wendigo, and as the movie moves toward the final act we finally begin to see some action. We are left with the question whether the final brutal acts are the product of madness, or does the entity Sator actually exist and has orchestrated the whole thing. There are definitely some genuinely shocking and disturbing moments that are as original as they are creepy. Excellent visual art though it is, the background music, Rachmaninoff methinks coupled with the strange quotations taken almost directly from Malachi 3:1-4, would seem to weave a deeper plot but they are simply window dressing not fleshed out. Unfortunately, it let me down by taking its potential originality down a very mundane path that we've seen many time before.
