In England in the 1600s, Dr. Peter Blood (Errol Flynn) treats the wounds of a man who had been injured in a rebellion against King James II, for which he is convicted of treason and sold into slavery in the Caribbean colony of Port Royal, Jamaica. Despite the kindnesses of his new owner, Arabella Bishop (Olivia de Havilland), Blood and his fellow slaves escape to begin a life of high-seas piracy. But when Captain Blood crosses paths with Arabella again years later, he remembers her compassion.

Even if countless other movies, TV series and theme park rides have robbed Captain Blood of its freshness, the movie still plays as a rollicking adventure today, one rife with old Hollywood craftsmanship and sexual subtext.

Today, it's a little long and creaks in places, and Flynn was never much of an actor, but the camera loved his devil-may-care arrogance, and Captain Blood remains important as the first leading role of one of the greatest of all movie legends.

Captain blood is the first big blockbuster of its kind for 1935. You had epic Cannon fights with ships and swashbuckling battles. Definitely the Launch of the modern day blockbuster. Errol Flynn is great in this film, and you can certainly see why he would become a swashbuckling hero throughout many of the other pictures he starred in. Overall, Captain blood is a great two hour blockbuster adventure.

All Time Classic. Errol Flynn is amazing to watch in this and carries this film with his charisma that lights up the screen. The supporting cast is really good also, especially Olivia. The cinematography is amazing with exceptional camerawork, lavish sets, amazing special effects for the battles, and great pirate outfits. This also has elements of expressionist styling at times as well. The final battle is jaw dropping to watch and the definition of a Hollywood Spectacle with a charming happy ending to top it off. Amazingly the black and white never really gets in the way of making things pop and be memorable. The editing & pacing are masterful as well. This is an excellent adventure as we watch Peter from a green idealistic pacifist doctor become a noble pirate who never loses an ounce of likability the whole way. It remains focused on him 95% of the time as well and balances drama, romance, and action perfectly. Everyone should give this a try once.
