BARDO is an epic, visually stunning and immersive experience set against the intimate and moving journey of Silverio, a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker living in Los Angeles, who, after being named the recipient of a prestigious international award, is compelled to return to his native country, unaware that this simple trip will push him to an existential limit. The folly of his memories and fears have decided to pierce through the present, filling his everyday life with a sense of bewilderment and wonder. With both emotion and abundant laughter, Silverio grapples with universal yet intimate questions about identity, success, mortality, the history of Mexico and the deeply emotional familial bonds he shares with his wife and children. This movie is like seeing stars, suddenly time has passed but also no time has passed, you are in one world one moment then reality shifts and you're not sure what exactly is happening. The moment it starts you are thrown into the dream state of an expanding desert, and you travel through the experience of being Latino American. There are moments of pain, fear, anxiety, joy, grief, regret -- must watch for the romantic and existential viewer

While I won't deny that this is probably the most visually accomplished film of the year, it's also a self-indulgent bore that makes the same blunt point over and over again for almost three hours. Entertaining at first, but it just turned into a tedious slog.

It was refreshing to see a movie that presents a vivid poetic experience about Mexico in our time. Mexico has a vibrant society and culture that is fraught with the contemporary tensions found in other cultures abroad, and it is haunted by its Colonial past where sins were committed that reverberate to the current time. A Mexican experience is presented here, yet the experience is, unfortunately, universal. Drawbacks for me pertain to character development. The characters are very appealing and the dialogue is believable, especially between the younger people and the adults. The character Silverio Gacho is charismatic, however I wish that I could have gotten to know him more. He is inner turmoil seems more illustrative rather than truly felt, though this may perhaps be the point
