See more 03/15/2016 This is labeled as a psychological thriller, about a woman's slow descent into madness. In reality, this movie is a choppy mess of confusion and chaos. The starring couple bought a house without ever having seen it, and without any knowledge of it being a duplex, or having tenants, no phones, no power, and no running water. There are several massive chunks of important information missing. The couple is somber and dark one moment, and crazy in love the next, and then abruptly fighting without any explanation. This back-and-forth behavior between them lasts throughout the movie, and is never explained as to why they suddenly hate each other. Three days into the move, they still have no furniture. and no mattress on their bed. She hears a conversation through a wall, which is completely inaudible, and she begins panicking and running outside trying to stop someone from leaving in the middle of the night. Her previously sleeping husband comes out, and tells her to go to bed, and she says "We have to stop him! We have to call the police, why don't you believe me!?" Without her saying anything to him beforehand. A man is talking casually, and then there's eerie music, and nothing happens. There was no hint about him being dangerous, he wasn't holding a knife, or other weapon, or doing anything suspicious. During actually creepy moments, there is no music at all. She knocks on the neighbor's door and doesn't even give her a single minute before getting a nasty tone, and breaking into her house. This is halfway into the movie, and it's only her second attempt to talk to the unseen neighbor, the first attempt she didn't even know if the woman was home and still acted aggressively. The music is horrifically loud, and drowns out anything we SHOULD be hearing. There's no "thriller" aspect, just obnoxious noise and choppy scenes that give the impression of "This is supposed to be scary, but we don't know why. Maybe loud crescendos will make it scarier" and "WE know what the story is, so we don't need to explain these scenes", like the writer and director expected the viewers to know what the in-between segments were. The writing is absolutely terrible, and I hope to hell that Blu De Golyer never writes again, and that David Mun never directs another movie. These two, particularly, are a match made in an outhouse. I give it a solid 3 out of 5 See more jesse o @RT12547577 08/15/2015 You know, just cause a movie has a cool twist, a surprise in and of itself, does not instantly make this film into a good one. I say this because, for some reason, this film has a surprisingly positive reaction on this here website. Positive might be overstating the point but, according to the Flixster user score, 55% of people gave this film a rating of 3.5 stars or better. And I just don't see what this film could've possibly offered, past the twist, to make them think that this film was really good or possibly even better than that. Yes, this is definitely a more psychological film than it is a straight-up horror movie, but I found this film to be incredibly dull and, worst of all, an absolute chore to get through. This is probably the worst thing a movie can do, even above being terrible, because if a film is a chore to get through then you can shut it off and you wouldn't even really care enough to be bothered by the fact that you didn't finish the film. At least, in my opinion, with a terrible movie, you're feeling something about the film. There's a reaction. And the review itself would actually be very therapeutic if it's a particularly bad movie. A film that's dull or a chore to get through doesn't really inspire anything, it's not like you want to review it. The problem with this film, outside of the fact that it's 90 minutes of nothing and 15 minutes of a good climax, is the fact that there doesn't seem to be much tension in the film. You can tell that something is very clearly wrong with Maggie right from the start, and that she isn't in her right state of mind, mentally, but the acting leaves a lot to be desired in some scenes. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's not so good. There's nothing much that's really motivating you to keep going, because you have somewhat of an idea on how the film will end, but it's like there's simply not enough interesting shit going on in the film to justify it going as long as it actually did. It's unjustifiably long. The story isn't interesting. There's very little in the way of actual horror, not that it was meant to be, but sometimes even these psychological films have more horror than this had. It's perplexing to think about who this film was actually meant for. It's framed as a horror movie, but it plays out like anything but. The last 15 minutes are definitely horror, but it's simply much too late by that time. Again, there's 90 minutes that the film wastes by simply plodding along and doing the bare minimum in order to get by. It's incredibly fucking boring to watch. It's not that this is a bad movie, not even in the slightest, it's just that it takes a pretty good idea and does absolutely nothing with it until the climax. If this film was, say, 80-85 minutes long, it'd have played out so much better. There's so much stuff in the film that could've been cut out in order for the sake of the pacing, but they just didn't. Not a very good movie until the climax. And even then it's not like it elevates the film past a level where I could say that it's good. This is a chore to get through and I definitely wouldn't recommend it. You won't miss out on anything if you decide to skip out on this. See more 10/05/2014 Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but definitely not great, either. The acting, script, and production design are all decent. However, a weak plot, slow pacing and generally unlikable characters really make this a one-time watch and nothing more. This film is horror-lite with some real Lifetime made-for-TV overtones and a fairly absurd premise. Our protagonist Maggie suffers a miscarriage after her mean-drunk husband decides to toss her around a bit. Instead of taking the obvious move and leaving his ass immediately, she moves out with him to a house in the middle of nowhere, since boredom is such a wonderful cure for alcoholism. Oh, and did I mention this house has no electricity or phone lines? Yeah, no electricity or phone lines or cell phone reception. And she still doesn't leave. Then she starts hearing strange noises throughout the house which hubby can't hear and won't acknowledge. And she still doesn't leave. This movie is sloooooow and leans heavily on atmosphere. The only real horror comes from watching our protagonist slowly unravel as she realizes that she made a horrible mistake moving to the country. The ending has a bit of an interesting twist (I'll admit: I wasn't expecting it), but it didn't really make up for the rest of the story. If you're a HUGE fan of slow-build psychological suspense, you might like this film, but if you're looking for a serious horror film, look elsewhere. See more Read all reviews
