DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD 1d A work of despair at lost causes, often summarised as the French Death Wish, Legitimate Violence is actually less interested in revenge than in the social and political anxieties that make revenge seem attractive in the first place. Caught between genres, political moods and eras, it feels like a product of the early 70s rather than the 80s, and visually, looks like it belongs to the darker strain of the French neo-polar tradition. Director Serge Leroy creates a pretty great atmosphere of moral decay and distrust, favouring grim urban environments and a pervasive sense of menace. I probably wouldn't have even sought Legitimate Violence out in the first place if it hadn't been for my continuing quest to keep Christopher Lambert as my most-watched actor of the year, even if it meant enduring one of his worst haircuts.
