The setting and cinematography are beautiful, and I really liked Sybylla as a character, but some parts felt a little slow and the romance didn't always work for me. I like the series, but it is flawed. The use of modern music and breaking the fourth wall was cutesy and detracted for the whole. Sybylla's frequent mugging to the camera got old, and although I like the actress, those closeups reminded me of Beaver Cleaver looking out the back window of the car in the opening credits of the final season of "Leave It to Beaver." The choice of the actor to play Harry was odd. There could have been better chemistry. The series was heavy-handed with some of its messaging. The movie got the point across more by storytelling rather than being didactic. Both were visually attractive. I assume Frank (Jake Dunn) is supposed to be charming, but the acting doesn't get me there. The love triangle feels less like an emotional dilemma and more like an unnecessary distraction from Sybylla's actual story. Why would I ever root for the toxic Frank, who wants Sybylla to diminish herself in order to be his wife? See more Beck M @RT50434769 2d Rushed, Inconsistent and Lazy ending completely unbalanced. The show spent far too many episodes on Caddagat estate forcing the climax of Sybylla’s poverty, her time as a governess, and Harry's departure and return to be crammed into a frantic final episode. It should have ended at Caddagat Harry’s return made no sense. For someone who claimed to love Sybylla, completely ghosting while she endured brutal isolation is incredibly cold—she wasn't even angry…a cheap, plot twist like Sybylla was just imagining while writing her book.Dropping jarring, trendy fourth-wall breaks in the final completely broke the show's established narrative rules. having the sister do it too completely ruined the device, turning a period piece into reality TV style gimmick.The finale felt like a completely different show to the rest . It built up great character development and beautiful romance, only to completely flush its own logic down the toilet in the final minutes to chase cheap cliffhangers.
