On the day that their parents die, sisters Lilly and Victoria vanish in the woods, prompting a frantic search by their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain). Five years later, miraculously, the girls are found alive in a decaying cabin, and Lucas and Annabel welcome them into their home. But as Annabel tries to reintroduce the children to a normal life, she finds that someone -- or something -- still wants to tuck them in at night.

Horror prodotto da Guillermo Del Toro che onestamente sembra anche diretto da lui per quel distinguibile atmosfera dark e tetra che avvolge gran parte delle sequenze più paurose. La trama non si sposta troppo dai soliti film del genere con una presenza che aleggia vicino alle due piccole sopravvissute. Sicuramente Jessica Chastain riesce a dare un piccolo sprint in più grazie alla sua abilità; peccato non aver sviluppato meglio alcuni aspetti della trama che avrebbero reso il film più completo e probabilmente riuscito. Complessivamente comunque alcune sequenze di tensione sono molto ben eseguite e il film è apprezzabile e gradevole, con un finale azzeccato.

For what appears to be a fairly stereotypical ghost horror movie, Mama has a pretty original context, a well-built premise and quite a lot of bittersweet drama.
