Joe G @RT11890750 Aug 17 Strained and overrated. Some very funny bits mostly not directly involving Hulot, and mostly by the restaurateur. I say bits and not scenes, because I see this as just a series of visual gags strung together...and mostly poor ones at that. The character Hulot plays himself consistently but it is a sorry self to be playing, with little hope of getting any funnier as the film progresses. I stopped and restarted and stopped watching, finally giving up 3/4 of the way through. With no discernible plot, I don't think I missed anything that would have changed my opinion. The meticulous timing & staging reveal one of the true auteurs in cinema, who would find full flowering in one of cinema's greatest achievements, his "Playtime," which takes his formal approach to dizzying heights. "Holiday" is the antecedent, not only in time, but in familial, formal rigor. These kinds of holidays, where eccentric strangers negotiate each other's foibles and are summoned to indifferent meals by a bell, no longer exist. When did you last see men wearing heavy jackets and smoking pipes as they strolled on the beach. It's a lovely film, but the restored version is no improvement and Tati was ill-advised to tinker with it. See more Read all reviews
