Jay Weissberg Variety May 25, 2006
Lluis Arcarazo's unfocused script fails in the first half to generate enough sympathy for the charming but irresponsible protag, but then switches gears and piles on the sentiment in pure TV movie fashion once execution time approaches. Go to Full Review

Where we should be caught up in the emotion of a man staring death in the face, we are marvelling at the clunky switch from Seventies crime thriller to run-of-the-mill prison melodrama. Go to Full Review

Marco L @decatur555 Feb 17, 2025 Cinema about historical memory usually walks complicated ground, and this film does it with rare intensity. Manuel Huerga brings a powerful visual style to the story of the Catalan anarchist executed by Franco's regime in 1974. Before his inevitable fate, we see a human Salvador, with ideals, mistakes and a life taken from him without mercy. Daniel Brühl is exceptional, building a character who feels alive even in the quietest moments, and the anguish he conveys at the end is hard to shake. The first part, the robberies, has a stylized air that feels more staged than realistic, but once the film focuses on the trial and the days before the execution, it turns raw, direct and devastating. It avoids empty idealization and fake nostalgia: there are no cardboard heroes or villains, just a story that hurts because it was real. The final stretch lands like a punch in the stomach. A dry blow of reality that leaves its mark. See more Oct 10, 2013 I just finished watching this film...hadn't found anywhere until now. Didn't disappoint me at all. This is a 2 hr long film and you never feel it. I wanted to see it because I know of the Salvador Puig Antich case & this film you do see the reality of what happened, Bravo to Manuel Huerga & Lluis Arcarazo, great job & also to the actors the performance was great! This is a story that make laugh, get mad, get happy, get sad....without knowing you involve all of your emotions. See more Apr 14, 2013 Daniel Bruhl is a decent, contemporary actor from Germany. Perhaps this story is so distant & unrelated to me, the only thing left worthwhile to see is the mood building-up, & the abrupt but interesting relationship description between Salvador (Bruhl) & the prison guard (Leonardo Sbaraglia). See more Mar 30, 2013 Stunning film, a great film on seeing how depraved men are. There are people here who deserve life less than the protagonist and I can see how powerful man's irrational and vengeance can be. Also, one of the few films with a visual scene of garrotting.
