Mike W @Mikew1404 Aug 14 Who knew this fun little action comedy would spawn one of the most enjoyable franchises of recent years? Mike Lowry (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) are two maverick cops thrown into danger while babysitting the only witness to a brutal murder linked to a drug dealer guilty of stealing drugs from the evidence locker of their own precinct. Tea Leoni also stars as Julie the aforesaid witness who although absolutely gorgeous and a very good actress is such a damn annoying character throughout the film that she alone knocks half a star off for me. The film itself is quite formulaic, the good guys are trigger happy and unorthodox, their Captain is constantly screaming about the mayor being up his ass (what is it with Hollywood Police Captains and Mayors?) And the villain has no moral compass and will kill anyone who gets in his way. Although predictable the movie is enjoyable and some of the situational comedy hits the mark. See more Chris S @Janomi Jun 14 Michael Bay's Bad Boys isn't the most complex buddy-cop film ever made, but it established a formula that would define the franchise for decades. More than the plot itself, the movie succeeds because of the chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Smith brings effortless charisma and movie-star confidence, while Lawrence provides much of the comedy, and together they create a partnership that feels natural from the start. Bay's stylish camera work, energetic pacing, shootouts, explosions, and car chases give the film a distinct identity, even if the story occasionally feels thin. Téa Leoni adds plenty of personality as Julie, while Joe Pantoliano is consistently entertaining as the perpetually frustrated Captain Howard. Some of the humor and storytelling show their age, but the film's charm remains intact. It's a fun, high-energy action comedy that works largely because its two leads are so enjoyable together. See more Jake W @JakeTheMan Jun 8 The Birth Of Michael Bay! Firstly, the chemistry between the two leads is completely off the charts and feels completely comedic and natural. This is likely because Smith and Lawrence improvised a large portion of their dialogue. The score is shockingly underrated and would go on to be present within every other film in the franchise displaying it's true impact. The cinematography is beautiful with the orange backdrop of Miami giving the film a classic 90's glow. There is some really solid payoff in the third act with Mike Lowrey obtaining revenge for himself as well as Tea Leoni's character whilst Martin Lawrence learns how to properly drive. The villain is quite generic but is still well acted and the side cast is solid with the police captain being the standout. Tea Leoni's character is however quite frustrating at times with her going against Mike and Marcus' orders causing further chaos to ensue.
