In the wake of her grandmother's funeral, hotel manager Lisa Reisert is waiting to fly back home when she meets charming Jackson Rippner at check-in. She thinks it luck that they're seated together on the plane, but soon learns otherwise. Jackson hopes to assassinate the head of Homeland Security, but to do so, he needs Lisa to reassign the official's room number at her hotel. As insurance, Jackson has kidnapped Lisa's father.

When taking place at the airport and on a plane, “Red Eye” is pitch perfect. The cloistered space and confined quarters ratchets up the suspense, often to uncomfortable (but welcomed) levels.

Red Eye has plenty to like because the thriller setup is so tight and simple. A woman trapped on a flight next to a charming stranger who reveals he is part of an assassination plot is direct, easy to understand, and immediately tense. Rachel McAdams gives the movie a strong emotional center as Lisa. She is smart, frightened, capable, and resourceful without turning into an unrealistic action hero. Cillian Murphy is excellent as Jackson Rippner because he begins smooth and almost charming before slowly letting the threat underneath show. His calmness makes him more intimidating. Wes Craven keeps the movie lean and focused, using the airplane setting for natural claustrophobia. The final act is less interesting once the story leaves the plane and becomes a more standard chase thriller, but Red Eye is still efficient, tense, and very watchable.
