Critics Consensus

It may not rank with Scorsese's best work, but Shutter Island's gleefully unapologetic genre thrills represent the director at his most unrestrained.

It's supposed to be some suspense thriller... somebody should have said hey why don't you go see the hilarious comedy of Shutter Island. Go to Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator Aug 30, 2018
It's not a serious film and it's not even an especially suspenseful film but it is fun, in a Dr Caligari sort of way. Go to Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Sep 11, 2017

A twisted psychological thriller that leaves you guessing until the very end, Shutter Island is yet another fantastic collaboration between DiCaprio (giving another pitch-perfect and near heartbreaking performance) and director Martin Scorsese. JUAN ALEJANDRO O @RT54916223 4 days ago Of course this is the only Silent Hill movie that’s good, and that’s weird because it isn’t even a Silent Hill movie. I love when Leonardo Di Caprio does with his acting, an that plot twist simply is amazing, when you are seeing a Scorsese movie you know See more Max M @Househuntermax Oct 25, 2026 Compelling at times, but overall just kind of slow. There doesn’t seem to be a a lot of energy put into it. One of those movies it feels like everyone was contractually obligated to do. If you’re looking for a good movie night movie, maybe pass on this one. See more Jordan S @jswez Oct 18, 2026 First time watching it since its original release and I wasn’t disappointed. I tend to give my memory too much credit and avoided the film for years because I thought I already knew everything, but even though I “re-remembered” the twist it was still quite entertaining. See more FUYU T @fiyuyu Oct 15, 2026 Pretty underwhelming, and not particularly suspenseful at all. A bit of an obvious conclusion that ended quickly. Concept is pretty much a rip-off of A Beautiful Mind. See more Gunner I @RT64755212 Oct 14, 2026 Leonardo DiCaprio hit a home run with this movie. See more Brandon B @syncopatedbeet Oct 10, 2026 A very surreal film. It’s hard to follow at times, due to the ambiguity of the storytelling, however its deep mystery and engaging symbolic imagery keeps you engaged. See more Read all reviews
