Meaning The Walking Dead ripped off every aspect of this film. But I'm sure Zombie wonks will say the mall scene in this film is from Zombie Flick X, and the naked-atop-the-Ferris wheel/nachos buffet scene (was that pica de gallo or blood?!) is from Y. Every Zombie is every other Zombie, a funhouse mirror of Humanity's Essence. What essence? Like every true monster film, the humans are inevitably worse than the monsters. WE are the Walking Dead, folks. Acting? Cillian Murphy channels Kate Moss with an Amish beard. Naomie Harris brings the vibrancy of someone who is acting for their life. (Spoiler alert: at one point she is attacked by a reanimated serving of fish and chips.) Jackie Gleason, as the father figure, gives his best effort since Smokey and Bandit, Part 3. But the city of London is the star. London, a brutal history of humans being humans. And rain. What unfolds is part drama, part dark comedy, and entirely human. The strength of this film lies in Bullock’s performance. She fully embodies Gwen’s denial, resistance, and eventual awakening, making the audience not only sympathize with her but also reflect on the difficult path of recovery itself. Her portrayal feels honest, never overplayed, and gives the film the credibility it needs to work. It’s a character-driven story, and Bullock carries it with a mix of wit, charm, and raw emotion. Betty Thomas’s direction also deserves praise. She ensures that the film doesn’t slip into melodrama, instead balancing the heaviness of addiction with moments of humor and lightness. Rehab is shown as both grueling and hopeful — a place where relapse and progress walk hand in hand. Thomas capitalizes on the importance of group dynamics, making sure that the ensemble cast of fellow patients each brings something meaningful to the screen. That said, the screenplay by Susannah Grant is where the film occasionally stumbles. The pacing is uneven at times, and a few plot points feel forced rather than organic. These flaws may explain why the film didn’t achieve “mega-hit” status or why some critics and audiences were lukewarm upon release. But to dismiss 28 Days outright would be unfair — because beneath its imperfections lies a film that genuinely resonates. Personally, I believe 28 Days deserves more credit than it often receives. It’s rewatchable, thought-provoking, and a reminder that recovery isn’t about perfection but about perseverance and self-discovery. While the film may not have reached blockbuster acclaim, it offers a heartfelt, honest look at addiction and the strength it takes to face yourself. Final Verdict: 28 Days may not be flawless, but it’s an important, well-acted, and emotionally engaging story. Sandra Bullock elevates the material, and her performance alone makes it worth watching. I recommend giving it a chance — perhaps even more than once. Also themes of a parent's alcoholism and death and her sometimes fractious relationship with her sister were present. Recommended viewing. See more Sergei D Aug 23 Been there myself.
