While After.Life has an intriguing premise, the way the main character is written is frustratingly inconsistent. Too often she’s portrayed as if her intelligence has been swapped out for cauliflower, making choices that defy logic. She’s trying to escape a dangerous man, yet sometimes she tiptoes silently and other times stomps around loudly enough to give herself away. When she finally has a weapon, she surrenders it far too easily to the serial killer? And instead of calling 911 in a crisis, she phones her boyfriend — a decision that makes no sense in the moment. It’s disappointing to see women written as either impossibly strong 92‑pound superheroes taking down 250‑pound men, or as helpless, clueless characters with no agency. Women have equal intelligence to men, and the writing here doesn’t reflect that. Ricky Gervais is brilliant in his acting, writing and directing and if you have a sensitive and caring side you will definitely love this. Besides being somewhat sad, and uplifting at the same time, Gervais delivers with some very dark and serious humor. Do yourself a favor and give it a look. See more Mike C @RT63773704 06/19/2024 So, what you think is what you think. She is obviously still alive. Everyone watching is waiting for the tense discovery and escape, but it never comes. The ending is rushed, over in 10 minutes, and she doesn't escape, and her boyfriend never discovers the truth. It's a sad ending for no reason other than to be edgy I guess, but it just leaves you annoyed. Plus, parts of the story make no sense. The whole movie is a bit amateurish. Everyone is whispering for dramatic effect and scenes are drawn out, because they don't have enough money for more scenes. It is a good idea for a psychological thriller done badly with a bad ending.
