It skitters and jumps, shivers and boot-scoots, never, ever sitting still. You could say it's like "Blow," on well, blow. But there's a breezy sunniness to this film, which looks like a faded snapshot reclaimed from an '80s photo album.

One assumes that Cruise got this film made, yet he's a terrible fit for the role: he's always done his best work portraying smart, insightful characters in dramatic stories, but Seal was a yahoo whose sorry escapades are played here for cynical laughs.

American Made is what happens when a pilot gets bored, the CIA gets desperate, and everyone decides that international drug trafficking sounds like a solid career move. Tom Cruise flies planes, moves cocaine, dodges the law, and smiles like he’s selling Girl Scout cookies. The whole thing is slick, wild, and packed with enough bad decisions to fill an airport hangar. Crime. Drugs. Guns. Government bullshit. And Tom Cruise having the time of his life. Great movie. Terrible career advice.

American Made flies with the confidence of a great bar story, wild enough to make you question it, grounded enough to make you believe every word. Tom Cruise is magnetic, turning Barry Seal into a guy who's always one reckless choice away from disaster and somehow smiling through all of them. The film races from one impossible situation to the next with sharp humor and effortless style, but what lingers is the quiet sadness beneath the adrenaline. It's a reminder that chasing the next big score is easy; knowing when you've already won is the hard part.

From TWA pilot to CIA aerial photographer to drug and gun runner, Tom Cruise appeared to be having fun, as he usually does in this emminently enjoyable and fast moving film.

American Made feels like someone kept saying, "It can't possibly get crazier," and the movie took that as a personal challenge. Tom Cruise is all charm and bad decisions, sprinting through one unbelievable mess after another with a grin that somehow makes it work. It's funny, fast, and the kind of wild true story that makes fiction seem lazy.
