Don J 07/10/2021 Saw the new 4K remaster of Basic Instinct (2021) produced by Rialto Pictures and Studio Canal. The transfer was really good and clean and felt fresh for a movie that is almost 30 years old. I had not seen this movie in about 15 years, so seeing it on the big screen felt pretty fresh. Is Basic Instinct a great movie? No. But, I think it was a bold movie for it's time to take on some really explicit material including sexual and sadistic violence, which many producers didn't have the courage to take on before. The movie's main strength is the electrifying chemistry between Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. Paul Verhoeven leans into the glamour, paranoia, sex, violence, and psychological games with total confidence, giving the film a bold, provocative identity. Sharon Stone completely owns it as Catherine Tramell, making her seductive, icy, playful, and impossible to read. Her tension with Michael Douglas’s Nick Curran is easily the film’s biggest hook, shifting between attraction, suspicion, manipulation, and self-destruction. The mystery has plenty of intrigue, but the twists, suspects, and police drama can feel more lurid than airtight. Nick is also so reckless and unpleasant that he leaves the film with a cold emotional center. There’s plenty to like here, especially Stone’s magnetic performance, but the shock value sometimes overshadows the story. It has a strong psychological element and reminds of the suspense style seen in films inspired by Alfred Hitchcock, where the story constantly shifts your perception of who the real culprit might be. One of the biggest highlights is the music by Jerry Goldsmith. The performances are excellent. Sharon Stone stands out with a powerful and confident presence, while Michael Douglas and Jeanne Tripplehorn deliver strong supporting performances.
