When mysterious Vianne and her child arrive in a tranquil French town in the winter of 1959, no one could have imagined the impact that she and her spirited daughter would have on the community stubbornly rooted in tradition. Within days, she opens an unusual chocolate shop, across the square from the church. Her ability to perceive her customers' desires and satisfy them with just the right confection, coaxes the villagers to abandon themselves to temptation -- just as Lent begins.

Chocolat is a charmingly light-hearted fable with a lovely performance by Binoche.

Concession counters should be prepared for the accompanying deluge; after subjecting audiences to two hours of mouthwatering temptation, they could probably sell the stuff by the vat. Go to Full Review

A truly astonishing exercise in retro-Gallic nostalgia. I kept gagging on this treacly fantasy as I haven't done since poor Ms. Caron played opposite Horst Buchholz in Joshua Logan's screen version of "Fanny." Go to Full Review

A little of this magic goes a long way, and the story's dramatic conflict is a stacked deck leading to predictable conclusions. But given the season, Chocolat is a charming trifle. Go to Full Review

Movies are most powerful when they function as cultural myth. Chocolat stealthily feeds the soul with positive images and feelings that give meaning to our lives. And what fun! Go to Full Review

Chocolat isn't as sensual as Like Water for Chocolate, sentimental as Big Night or gluttonous as Babette's Feast. It's more like a sprig of parsley on the side of a full plate of holiday releases. Nibble, if you wish. Go to Full Review

Binoche and Depp make a fetching pair, but Chocolat runs longer than either its Hershey’s Kiss-size plot or sugary charm warrant. Go to Full Review

S S. @SShol Nov 9 It’s a sweet movie, and the acting is superb across the whole cast. It’s just a shallow movie, that almost yearns to have a deeper message or allegorical meaning behind it - but it ends with a somewhat sappy sweet finale and the viewer is left somewhat unsatisfied. If anything, watch this for the acting and the town vibe - masterfully crafted world building within this town. The story itself can be put on the back burner See more Stephen C @bob25009 Nov 4 Success in 2 hours and 1 minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is everything I would like life to consist of...Vianne is also a very capricious, almost witchy but warm character with a great heart. I am obsessed with Chocolat See more thiago s @Thiagostone Aug 2 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Riccardo D @RickDB 01/31/2025 Just a small beautiful and heartwarming story that's needed whenever one's feeling down. The story takes place in a post WW2 world, around the 60's in a small village in France that could very well be in a world of its own as it's immersed in its own atmosphere and little community. The viewer hardly ever sees references to the rest of the world except for small things such as "ireland's finest" or "american's rock". This sets the stage for a story of acceptance, friendship, and love that touches important messages while staying light and fun, and is accompanied by a great and immersive soundtrack by Rachel Portman, as it happened in other Lasse Hallström's films. Characters are fun and most also have quite a nice development arc that helps giving a sense of satisfaction by the end. Protagonists give good lighthearted interpretations. Worth watching and rewatching. See more Horror fan 4 @Horrorfan4life 10/31/2024 A beautiful romantic movie with a stellar cast. An absolutely must see film.. Tim Treakle See more Read all reviews
