It is not a horror film. There are only two violent scenes and they are both absurd, quasi tongue in cheek. For perspective, imagine if Peckinpah directed this. It's an intensely satirical send up of British society. It's pure Kurbick, a mixture of Barry Lyndon and Doctor Strangelove. The whole mis-en-scene is garrish, kitch, painfully obvious bad taste and cartoonish. Violence seems to be associated with a lack of culture and the establishment is either an extension of the culturally deprived, or else totally hypocritical. The only sincere character is Alex, a depraved sociopath. Alex is authoritarian. He loves prison, even though he's a prisoner. Inspite of his brainwashing, he retains his pathology. Everything in his life is random and discounted. His obsessive love of Beethoven is probably no less random. He is a person without a core. Kubrick even seems to mock Burgess. Sadly it did not. The violence and twisted plot has not given me any more reason to see it in a new light. The message (and slim that it is) is lost in gratuitous violence. Brit’s behaving badly!
