Director and star conceived the story and then the cast largely improvised the dialogue that drives it along. Sometimes that results in meandering or overblown moments, but the general thrust is powerful enough to carry it along.

Close To You was one of the best films I’ve seen at TIFF 2023. The performances were magnificent. Page is stunning and heartbreaking to watch. The queer romance was beautiful. It was an immersive and authentic experience.

The romance in this film is way, way too unrealistic. I'm sorry for you romantics out there like me who always root for love even when it's unrealistic, but since this film is trying to capture real life there is no way in a million years that a rich bisexual woman is going to leave her decent, good looking husband, underage kids, and a very nice home and nice, wealthy, safe life in general for a poor transman who lives with a roommate. So that pulled me out of the film. Also frustrating how the day with the family ended so suddenly for no good reason really. His parents were trying so hard to accept him and have him be a part of the family, but instead he acted like a spoiled brat and just left without saying thanks for trying or even a good bye. Doing improve might have been fun for the actors but it wasn't fun for the audience.

Compelling showcase for Elliot Page that feels triumphant over his natural, personally experienced edge to solidify the improvised commentary, which the atmosphere feels ideally awkward and yielded till the erupted drama implies unseen possibility left unsatisfyingly unresolved. That may be intended, if so then the rest of the culminated energy is considerably uneven, but that could be conflicting when viewing this inexperienced or uninvolved enough to properly grasp. Simply put, Page’s may have independently found emotional bliss in his passion project, it’s the story that’s incomplete amidst misled direction. (B-)
