Best friends Richard Bone (Jeff Bridges) and Alex Cutter (John Heard) are two middle-class guys living in an upper-class town. The Santa Barbara buddies get dragged into a murder mystery when Richard accidentally spots a man ditching a body into a trash can. Alex, an embittered Vietnam veteran who lost an eye and leg in the war, thinks what Richard saw is worth something, especially when it comes out that the potential murderer is a wealthy and powerful man in the community.

I thought Jeff Bridges did a superlative job considering the absolutely terrible writing and directing of the film. Nothing about this movie justifies its production or release. It blew me away and shook me to my core. A modern film noir masterpiece with one of the best endings a movie has ever had. But that's about the only good thing with the film, relying on a terribly written script where the plot just rambles about trying to force character development while ignoring the actual story itself. It feels like two stories in one, where the neo-noir elements take a backseat to the less interesting drama of the effects of war and greed on individuals. It does a terrible job at that, not even attempting to balance the two, meandering between the less interesting drama more than the noir. Save yourself the headache and just watch the first few minutes to see Heard in action as the drunkard veteran. Then fast forward to the last 10 minutes, since that's about the place the story actually starts to pick up pace.
