Cinema S @cinema_sensei Aug 22 I really enjoyed the dark atmosphere and the way the movie slowly turns ambition into something disturbing. Al Pacino is easily the highlight and brings so much energy to the role that some of the over-the-top moments actually work. Keanu Reeves also fits the character well. The story gets a little excessive and melodramatic at times, but the themes of greed, temptation, and moral compromise kept me invested. Kevin Lomax, played by Keanu Reeves, embodies that conflict, torn between ambition and moral responsibility. Al Pacino dominates the film with a magnetic and intimidating performance, while Charlize Theron provides its emotional core with the most grounded and human portrayal. Unfortunately, Taylor Hackford’s direction and screenplay overcomplicate a premise that could have worked brilliantly as a psychological thriller. The tension between ambition, money, status and professional ethics is compelling, but the film eventually becomes a supernatural spectacle overloaded with theological speeches and grotesque imagery. Its Faustian fantasy dilutes the social criticism and moral tension at its core. Fascinating ideas and memorable performances, but ultimately too excessive for its own good. Well thought-out and exciting court scenes move the runtime along, and though the film loses its grace in its final moments, it recovers spectacularly with an undeniably entertaining ending. He is in good company with Pacino, whilst Theron is also outstanding as the troubled wife in this brilliantly cool and captivating story. It's refreshing to see a film stand the test of time by relying simply on great acting performances, a story with a few twists and turns and some powerfully shot scenes. This film has absolutely stood the test of time and looks as good now as it did 30 years ago.
