An immersion into the rich ecosystem of Sable Island, a remote sliver of land in the Northwest Atlantic, the film follows Zoe Lucas, a naturalist and environmentalist who has lived there for over 40 years collecting, cleaning and documenting marine litter that persistently washes up on the island's shores. Shot on 16mm and created using eco-friendly filmmaking techniques, Geographies of Solitude is a playful and reverent collaboration with the natural world filled with arresting images and made with an activist spirit.

It turns an ecology lesson, and an account of a noble, steadfast, single-minded pursuit, into art.

Geographies of Solitude is an organic balancing act between the more conventional documentary forms... and something weirder and wilder... altogether.

Filmmaker Jacqueline Mills uses a “contact mic” which enables us to hear the constant buzz of life – in wood, insects crawling up a plant – fascinating. Consider how lucky we are to be able to explore Sable Island for 90 minutes.

Kind of a lot of dead animals for my taste. I get it, it's nature, it's natural. But yeah. The doc had some seriously mesmerizing sound and visuals. The use of alternative film techniques was super cool, and there were a few absolutely jaw-dropping shots -- especially the starry night scenes. I was very bored by all the zoology deep-dives and animal databasing. Snooooooze. But I loved the nature and wildlife footage, especially the way it highlighted how we humans are leaving damage in our wake. So much trash and plastic, the island was like a vortex for junk.

Not only are the visuals outstanding, but the aural soundscape is astounding. Make sure you watch with surround sound.
