As Folk Horror, Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse is more abstract art than a spooky supernatural story. As it takes almost the entire film to come close to a horror story. The lead actress does have a very expressive face If not a fan of subtitles, be warned. Unsure if the return on time watching is well invested. No deep meaning for me besides the brutality of rural life, especially for a single female.

Hagazussa demands patience, but Chapter IV: Fire turns the slow buildup into a profound mythological masterpiece. Subverting folk horror like The Witch, it treats a witch's evolution not as a choice, but as a biological parasite that destroys its host. The curse begins in Chapter I, where the mother’s predatory bed scene shows her succumbing to a deeper evil. This parasite lingers for Albrun, who proves a stronger host against the villagers and Swinda’s brutal betrayal. Her initiation in Chapter III flips folklore. Instead of stealing a child, she sacrifices her own. Whether she blocks it out or the parasite takes over, the act crosses a vampiric threshold, purging her humanity. If she survived, she would become a literal Hag. Instead, Chapter IV reveals a system failure. The toll of pure evil is too massive for a human form; her body physically rejects the parasite and combusts. The descent into darkness is a volatile alchemy that completely consumes the woman inside.
