jesse v 6d the beginning was mostly kids meandering from scene to scene without cohesion, then the pace turns intriguingly dark for the story to actually kick in. Also there are random transitional nature shots and the kids knowing sexual info is so bizarre. how did the bullies know about the father? this has a similar messaging problem as Our hero Balthazar. It's NEVER explained why the mother keeps going to bars nor why she doesn't speak up. There are a lot of disjointed scenes and bizarre pacing. Why is the movie very light hearted and better when we see just the kids go on an adventure?? Cinematography was the best aspect of this movie, even though it's just a visual tour of Minnesota. This movie CONSTANTLY tries to make two heavy situations relate to each other and it just DOES NOT work. And somehow there is only ONE scene of a smart phone being used, and the family dog only shows up three times. See more Laurie G @LWGNYC 6d It's not what you think. It's not what you expect. Far from formulaic. The plot, the characters and the world they inhabit unfold at a human pace, with many subtle left turns along the way. It's refreshing to see a film in which both the young and adult characters are equally fleshed out and equally compelling. Beautiful performances. The cinematography is gorgeous.
