See more William T @BillTunell Jul 1 Some quick trivia: This movie starts with a scene depicting the 1925 football game between Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania. This game did not happen. Penn and Princeton did not play each other in football from 1895-1934. Initially, this was due to an incident after the 1894 game (12-0 Penn upset) which involved post-game fan violence at the Trenton Fairgrounds, unruly fan behavior on the train back to Philadelphia, and as some scattered hooliganism downtown (as an aside, the 1894 Harvard-Yale game in Springfield Massachusetts had similar post-game incidents, after which Harvard and Yale did not play each other in 1895 and 1896). In the years afterward, the administrative relationship between Princeton and Penn grew steadily worse, over issues such as graduate-student athletic eligibility and the existence of non-faculty coaching positions. Penn and Princeton did play in "minor" sports after 1897, including basketball (beginning in 1903), creating a heated rivalry. It has a charming premise and a light, old-school tone that makes it easy to sit through, with some enjoyable performances and a relaxed sense of humor. That said, it’s not the most memorable film. Some parts feel a bit forgettable, and I found myself not recalling certain moments afterward, which says a lot about its overall impact. It never really reaches a standout level, but it also doesn’t fall apart either. In the end, it’s a middle-of-the-road experience—pleasant enough while it’s on, but not something that leaves a lasting impression. For me, it lands at a 6/10. The story's not half bad, and the cast and their performances are mostly very good, especially the scenes with the two leads. However, american football is not really my thing, and that's what set's the stage for everything else that I quite liked. So I gave it 50%, although this may be a little too generous.
