Critics Consensus

As a gangster biopic, Legend is deeply flawed, but as a showcase for Tom Hardy -- in a dual role, no less -- it just about lives up to its title.

Legend really does waste the majority of its potential, Helgeland never tapping into the story of the Kray brothers in a way that is essential or lasting. Go to Full Review

Helgeland uses long-take shots through boisterous clubs, unreliable narration and splashes of violence to create a drama of little surprise and even less impact. Go to Full Review

It's not short of thrills, the biggest of which is Hardy's double performance. Go to Full Review

Its approach to the gangster genre makes me think that, certainly, it delivers a remarkable performance from Tom Hardy in his dual role, but his crime legends frequent commonplaces that never abandon the conventional tone. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Little more than an extravagant, blood-soaked and alcohol-fueled story, Legend fulfills its title; an overinflated piece of bar room folklore better told over a cold pint of Guinness (or several). Go to Full Review

Hardy's individual performances are excellent, quite predictably, though his characters are two-dimensional at best. Go to Full Review

Badger W @Badgerwalker 4d Taking this movie at face value as a vehicle for the staggering talent that is Tom Hardy this would probably score full marks. One mark down for all the little flaws that are not Hardy's fault. Fair? See more Dave K @BilboBagsy Aug 6 This is the perfect role for Tom Hardy. His performance as Charles Bronson blew me away and I always find that when he is placed in roles playing infamous characters from Britain's underworld he really shines. Not only is he a formidable force with his acting skills but I am always impressed by his physical commitment to becoming the people he plays. He was almost the spitting image of Charlie Bronson and he has done it again with the Krays. It's actually such a formidable performance that I genuinely think of him whenever the Krays cross my mind. You would think that playing both of the twins would be a difficult thing to do, but it works magnificently well and Tom creates a clear distinction between both Reggie and Ronald Kray. In my opinion he captures the postures, mannerisms and psyches of both of them so impressively well that you genuinely feel that they are two very different brothers. 8 / 10 See more Dixie M. @DMDarne123 Apr 20 This movie is very good documentary about the twins tom hardy did amazing job playing that. Thought Tom Hardy was great playing the twins I would recommend this movie! See more Gregory S @Gregory566 Nov 30 How Hardy was not at least nominated for an Oscar for his performance is an absolute travesty. It also shows how truly rigged the Oscars are. Hardy is absolutely incredible. See more Read all reviews
