Christian M @chriss17eu Aug 15 The terrible unnaturalism of cinema. The main problem is how rushed Guillem Morales’ storytelling feels. Julia’s grief should create genuine pain and vulnerability, but the editing never gives us time to process them. The script forces absurd clues and mysteries, while the supporting characters act suspicious for no reason, replacing real tension with constant artificiality. The dialogue tries to sound philosophical but ultimately boils down to platitudes, especially the villain’s monologue, which attempts to evoke 'The Silence of the Lambs' without achieving any real depth. The first half is pretentious, confusing, and emotionally flat. The second improves once it becomes a survival thriller, although the tiresome insistence on hiding faces remains. Visually, it is enjoyable, but Morales needed a less self-important script, more natural direction, and editing willing to take its time. Half way into the movie I was able to guess what's going on and I kept hoping that there would be a smart twist waiting to blow me away in the finale. It wasn't the case though. The final act is when things get really good. First and second act you're wondering what exactly is going on but in a good way, movie keeps you intrigued. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire second half (okay not literally; I was lounging on the couch, but I was tense!). Is romance-horror a genre? Rom-hor? I'm coining it: that's what this movie is. This film does an amazing job of keeping audiences guessing. It provides just enough ambiguity to be hard to predict without succumbing to being a black-box mystery. I also love the way it portrays blindness as a life-altering tragedy but not as something to be disrespected or to make one helpless. The framing of shots from the point of view of our occasionally-mostly-blind protagonist are impressive, especially the way that characters' faces are obscured from the camera when she can't see them either. It's a very clever way to draw out the mystery. My only complaint is that it feels tropey at times, almost like a soap opera; we've got twin sisters, cheating husbands, estranged children, imposters, and mysterious physical ailments. All that's missing is for a character to come back from the dead by inhabiting another character's body! But in all seriousness, most of the twists are really really good, but near the end a few of them feel forced. Julia's Eyes is a seriously thrilling ride, even if its twists occasionally feel unnatural. For fans of horror and thrillers, especially those who can appreciate a solid romance story, this is an easy one to recommend.
