See more Jonathan K @aFIREintheattic Jan 4 The music is the real star here, and the way Wim Wenders pairs it with the pacing and the shots is great. Especially how it sits alongside the dialogue and narration. There is a timing and rhythm to a lot of the lines that lays over the music almost like a vocal. I am not even that big of a U2 fan, nor Bono, but what he did with the music here, the silences he writes into it, and the way the soundtrack pulls in other artists like Brian Eno and Brad Mehldau gives the film a distinct character just from the music alone. I also thought the performances were really good, particularly the hotel residents and the lead actor. They are perfectly weird. Strange physical mannerisms, odd vocal noises, offbeat pacing, just very strange overall. Sometimes it's genuinely funny, and sometimes there are moments of real beauty. But it's not without flaws. I don't love that the narration is mixed so far back that you can barely hear it, though that seems intentional...
