Critics Consensus

Monster would have benefited from a less heavy-handed approach, but Kelvin Harrison Jr.'s performance gives this timely drama emotional heft.

Three years is a long time, especially these days, but even in 2018, reviews of the film balked at its gloominess and distracting filmmaking. It has not aged well. Go to Full Review

Diarra S 03/30/2024 Compared to the book it was very disappointing. I don't see the great acting everyone is talking about. I showed this my class after we finished the book. The stereotypically predictable Hollywood casting choices really hurt the story and believability of the the main character. The character is far more interesting and nuanced then portrayed in this terrible film. The whole class was disappointed by the way the film adapted the book. It has a very strong point which does relate to court-room drama, even as portrayed in most court-room drama movies, but it goes well beyond that, too. These are important social issues, excellently portrayed as food-for-thought in this film. See more michelle c 07/06/2021 I thought this film was going to be another propaganda film, putting in work to trigger a sense of victimization & race politics - but it turned out to be a really good work. It is a relatable story about peer pressure, but the unique dangerous kind that one might find in an American urban city. It touches into that grey area that can be tricky, and one the court would like to ignore in preference of straight "black & or white." The cast is top notch (ASAP Rocky does a good job, though over acting a bit) and the main character is simply adorable. He is a very beautiful young man so it is easy to watch him in this role. He is definitely a bright and shining star. He pulls off the emotional range required for this part quite well. This situation could happen to anyone his age, so I don't really get the black thing being injected into this story. And if you don't want to, you don't have to make this about race either. Actually, by the time you reach the end you'll see that it's about much more than race. Life is tricky, especially for impressionable young teens bordering on adult. This story is no Fruitvale station but I'd say it does a fantastic job of humanizing and revealing our main character and what his life is like on a day to day basis. The flashback scenes and the present scenes in the courtroom work together well to demonstrate what he is going through. The story is told in a way that makes these circumstances so relatable. Prepare for a surprise that takes this story to a peak worthy of the full 5 stars. It's a great watch and definitely leaves room for a huge debate afterward. I mean where do we draw the line between innocent and guilty? You might be asking yourself that exact question at the end. Does empathy belong in the court house? Can everything be black and white and simple such as "guilty or not guilty" or is it more complicated than that? As a NY'er myself, who grew up in the neighborhood where this film takes place, I remember when they passed the law concerning robberies in which an innocent person gets killed in the process. The law states that all parties involved will be charged with the murder, regardless to the role each person played - and if found guilty they would receive the same sentences. This film sheds some light on how bad a law like that might be when circumstances are as complex as what you'll see in Monster. I recommend it for sure. See more Read all reviews
