Summer 1978. Ignacio Cañas (Marcos Ruiz) is a 17-year-old introvert, and somewhat of a misfit student who lives in Girona. When he meets Zarco (Chechu Salgado) and Tere (Begoña Vargas), two young criminals from the city's Chinatown, he finds himself immersed in an unstoppable career of theft and robbery. It is the story in which Nacho grows older, crossing the line between good and evil, between justice and injustice.

Outlaws gets off to a slow start and by the end feels like several movies in one. Go to Full Review

Daniel Monzón's films have always centered on the loss of innocence as a bittersweet adventures and Las leyes de la frontera echoes this. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

It's there, in the gazes between the two characters (especially in those of Tere, played by a splendid Begoña Vargas) where the film finds the emotional pulse and authenticity it fails to depict in the rest of its footage. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Marco L @decatur555 Oct 22, 2026 A very enjoyable Spanish coming-of-age crime story that looks at quinqui cinema with affection rather than trying to copy its rawness. What works best is the feeling of crossing a border: Nacho, shy and sheltered, discovers Zarco, Tere, the gang, the street, the robberies, the music and the seduction of a freer, more dangerous life. The seventies atmosphere is one of the film’s great pleasures: cars, clothes, bars, streets and songs give the story rhythm, nostalgia and youthful energy. Marcos Ruiz, Chechu Salgado and especially Begoña Vargas have real chemistry, turning crime into a mix of desire, class tension and emotional discovery. It may soften the harsh social reality and sometimes prefers myth, beauty and memory to dirt and brutality. But that romantic stylization works. Entertaining, colorful, musical and melancholic, it turns a summer of robberies, songs and first wounds into a forbidden garden. More real than many movies. Not since City of God, or Y tu Mama Tambien, have I been this affected. We Americans should aspire to bring real romance, grit and relationships to the screen. Films such as Outlaws could be more than we can bear. See more Nov 23, 2021 You know it will all crash but it is an interesting ride. The actress who plays Tere steals the movie.
