Critics Consensus

An old-fashioned spookfest, this Salem's Lot won't be the definitive adaptation of Stephen King's famed vampire tale but it makes for a passable reintroduction to a new generation.

As a stab at making vampires physically and spiritually threatening again after a run of fictions more sympathetic to their outsider status, Salem’s Lot is intermittently effective. Go to Full Review

Salem’s Lot rises after years in the dark, a vampire tale with no heart and no stakes. Go to Full Review

By no means the disaster many might have expected following its years-long delay. You’ll like it. Not a lot, but you’ll like it. Go to Full Review

Despite all of its promise, Salem’s Lot is a shell of King’s acclaimed novel, encapsulating none of the terror or devastation of the vampire tale and instead falling flat on every level. Go to Full Review

Dauberman retains the book's 1970s milieu yet does little to flesh out the characters or build any palpable tension before revealing the chilling evil about to suck the life from the community. Go to Full Review

Dallas H @FozzieMcFly 5d Is this yet another movie in which Lewis "Bob" Pullman briefly looks sad or lonely? Maybe it's just a coincidence with his movies I've watched so far. This adaptation of Salem's Lot is decent. I haven't read the book yet, but I've been meaning to. The major issue I had with this movie is that the color grading pushed the contrast and color palette so far that it became aggressively apparent as the chaos of the vampire infestation began to unravel. The shadows are very precisely black and specifically placed on the screen. The vibrancy of the hues, such as the warm tones of the sun and sunset or the soft tones of blue, is dialed up with such intensity that these colors are practically bleeding off the screen. It was just too much. See more Rob G @Googanaba Aug 18 I wanted to bad to like this. Salem's Lot is among my top 3 Stephen King novels. After over 50 years, nobody has still made a film that does the story justice (just like King's The Stand). In fact, only the 1979 TV mini series comes close. If you are going to watch any adaptation of Salem's Lot, do yourself a favor and ditch the remakes and find the 1979 version. See more Gabriel S @Sanarel Aug 17 Suckers for Stephen King are going to enjoy this that is supposed to be the third or forth adaptation of Salem's Lot, homonymous book by Mr. King. The story follows Bem Mears, a writer that goes back to Jerusalem's Lot to search for inspiration for his next book while closing old wounds – until he stumbles upon a town overwritten by vampires. Although, in the book, character Ben is interesting and King, as often, does a great job developing him, the overall story itself is old-fashioned and cliched, both in the novel and in all adaptations. In 2026, what was the point of this adaptation? Probably love. But then again, Gary Dauberman – newbie Director, definitely not a newbie writer – does a great job in this adaptation, a remarkable soundtrack, great nostalgic vibes. Salem's Lot 2024 delivers for fans of King's work, it slightly flops as a standalone horror flick – still, the soundtrack is super cool. See more Russell H @RT85733992 Aug 14 Close enough to the book but the acting was bad and based on effects, I would believe it was from the 80s or early 90s. Also not scary at all See more V M @Character Aug 4 Classic Vampire adaptation of the original. Nothing special. Just entertaining when you’re bored. See more Joe J @JoeJke Jul 22 So bad I felt compelled to write this. I didn’t even finish the movie its currently still playing, im on a plane but still this movie is ridiculously unserious, the characters lack emotions… there is literal vampires and the characters just seem to act as if thats normal. Not to mention the one black kid with bigger balls than the whole cast combined.. bro found out there was vampires and was like "…I guess I gotta kill Barlow now…" like what. Your friends died, your parents died. Bruh See more Read all reviews
