Esther, a pregnant immigrant, illegally arrives in Puerto Rico and becomes the target of the authorities. During her escape, she encounters Arcadio, a man with intellectual limitations but a heart as vast as the island itself. Together, they embark on an odyssey from one end of Puerto Rico to the other, hoping to reach Esther's aunt's house in San Juan before the baby is born. Pursued by the police, while the governor uses their story to gain popularity, Esther and Arcadio must overcome ludicrous situations that, minute by minute, shape their unique friendship and their turbulent and humorous journey across the island.

Las actuaciones de Esther (Julieta Rodríguez) y Arcadio (Mario Guerra) son precisas, contundentes y verosímiles. La historia se construye sobre un eje —la relación entre Esther y Arcadio— y viñetas que se intersecan en su travesía. Son el aspecto más flojo del film: parecen segmentos que no encajan con el tono profundo, hasta sublime, del eje principal, creando una fractura tonal y narrativa. Una sátira de la banalización de la religión con un personaje caricaturesco, plano y acartonado; una subtrama detectivesca sin desarrollo argumental ni de caracterización; tres matones usados como alivio cómico; y una irrupción de lo fantástico con espíritus ancestrales que rompe el registro realista y no parece motivada por el relato.
