Sydney (Neve Campbell) and tabloid reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) survived the events of the first Scream, but their nightmare isn't over. When two college students are murdered at a sneak preview of Stab, a movie based on the events from the first film, it's clear a copycat killer is on the loose. Sydney and Gail, as well as fellow survivors Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) and Randy (Jamie Kennedy) have to find out who is behind this new murder spree, before they all end up dead.

Critics Consensus

As with the first film, Scream 2 is a gleeful takedown of scary movie conventions that manages to poke fun at terrible horror sequels without falling victim to the same fate.

It's nothing like as inventive as the first Nightmare on Elm Street, but it's much more thoughtful and provocative than most genre horror movies, and more fun. Go to Full Review

Good in the first half, begins to fade when new ideas are all used up and then finally staggers exhausted to the finish line. Go to Full Review

Scream 2 successfully takes the rules of a sequel - higher body count, bigger set-pieces - and delivers a film that intensifies everything from the self-aware humour and the death scenes to the emotional connections between its cast of characters. Go to Full Review

Feels less like the sequel that fans deserved and instead like one rushed into production to strike while the slasher iron was hot. Still, it's not without its charm and scares. Go to Full Review

This sequel properly continues the story of the original, lays even more crucial groundwork for its own sequels to play with, and establishes that the Scream formula can be replicated with the right amount of twists and turns. Go to Full Review

Alex B @AlexBioni 1d A Sequel That Knows It's a Sequel I think this is a great sequel. It's basically more of the first movie, but I love that. The opening theater scene is original and shows how movies can turn real life events into entertainment and affect the people who lived through them. I love the conversations about sequels. It keeps the movie fresh while making fun of being a sequel to a hit. The performances are great, including the new cast. Like the first, it kept me guessing who the villain was. The writing is excellent, and I loved the recreated scenes from the first movie in Stab, especially the actor playing Billy. I also liked Gale's arc, and the killers' motives felt believable. I don't like this quite as much as the first, but I still love it. I enjoy spending time with these characters, and this is a damn good sequel. See more Jasmine W @jasniquejewels 3d not as good as the first film but overall still very fun and worth the watch. scream still holds up to it's iconic franchise. See more Kolton B @kb1324 5d this sequel is super fun and almost as good as the first one. taking the scary movie rules and applying them to college and sequels is such a smart idea. seeing sidney try to move on with her life only for the ghostface killings to start all over again keeps you on your toes. the parking garage attack and the car scene are crazy intense. the only reason it drops a tiny bit is because the final reveal of who is behind the mask feels a little bit silly compared to the original, but it is still a top tier horror sequel.
