Christian M @chriss17eu Aug 15 Balagueró’s greatest strength is his economy of cinematic language. A brilliant sequence transforms César (Luis Tosar) in seconds, using editing, pacing, ellipses, and mystery with remarkable precision. César is presented as a psychopath, yet initially appears as a man seeking peace, making us empathize with him before that illusion collapses. The suspense works because we always share his point of view. We know what he is doing, while the victim doesn’t, creating confusion rather than a plot hole. The real horror is the hidden surveillance, control, and manipulation she suffers without knowing it. The script is remarkably solid, although some supporting performances feel overly theatrical. Tosar, however, is sublime and genuinely terrifying. Balagueró doesn’t reinvent the genre, but he knows exactly when to stop. A psychopath next door sleeps repeatedly with a woman after he renders her unconscious. In the end he is able to avoid any repercussions. And life goes on. There of course have been thrillers about malignant narcissists before, but this one is exceptional largely because it strictly stays in the protagonist's point of view instead of perfunctorily shifting to the other characters just to lessen tension or have broad appeal.
