It's the Fourth of July in Los Angeles when Jamie, a down-on-his-luck illustrator who's behind on rent, tries to throw a cookout while his overbearing roommate is out of town. When he decides to borrow his roommate's bike for a quick trip to the liquor store to grab lighter fluid, his entire day goes up in smoke. Sparked by a zany incident with a road-rager, Jamie soon finds himself far from home and trapped in a series of awkward, absurd, and infuriating situations.

There's a struggle between the simplified overview of history, sort of a History 101 (a PBS specialty), and the deep dives into individual stories, which is when the series especially shines.

In a way there's a sense of tragedy that this is all they have, a pathetic barbecue on a day off. The film doesn't take that angle though. We are supposed to consider Jamie the underdog hero trying to make everything right.

Wow, out of left field, this is a gem. Really fun. Think of the insanity of "After Hours" but move it to Los Angeles and replace the "80's shlub with a millennial. So funny.

This is underrated for sure. Kid has the worst luck ever during one day, handled in a hilarious and pretty even tempered way. If you like silly irony like I do, then you'll definitely laugh out loud at times.. like the truck nuts bit. Haha! He reminds me of that funny friend that trouble follows relentlessly but has the best stories, and it's just another day in his life. the struggle is real (funny!)
