One of Lugosi's Monogram cheapies; not very good, silly and campy. Go to Full Review

Claudio C @Claudio666 Oct 22, 2026 A Funny B-Movie (12,782 – 22 Oct 2026) When Agatha Brewster returns to USA, Dr. George Randall is waiting for her and says that her brother, Dr. James Brewster, is not missing but hidden in his lab after an awry experiment. Brewster injected himself with a serum to prove his theory and turned him into a half-ape. He believes the only way to return to human form is the injection of human spinal fluid which would be fatal to the donor. Dr. Randall refuses to help him. Brewster uses his gorilla to escape from his hideout and begins a crime spree, aiming at donors to collect their spinal fluid. But he returns only temporarily to human form and kills people again. The snoopy reporter Jeff Carter and photographer Billie Mason join the police investigation of the murders. "The Ape Man" (1943) is a funny B-movie with Bela Lugosi. The silly and unoriginal story is completely dated and only recommended for fans of bela Lugosi. My vote is five. Title (Brazil): "O Homem Gorila" ("The Ape Man") See more Chris M @RT21954632 Apr 7, 2023 There is a LOT wrong with this movie. I'm no doctor, but I'm sure there is more than one syringe full of spinal fluid in a human being. Also, I'm also convinced the spinal fluid isn't required to live. Realistically he might be causing paralyzation in people, not death. Next, that has got to be the worst Gorilla costume in movie history. I've seen better costumes in "3 Stooges" shorts. The makeup effects consist of gluing hair to his face and hands. But what's really good? Bela Lugosi as a doctor driven to insanity by desperation for a cure. Early on before he goes full mad scientist, you can hear the regret and sadness in his performance. He gave his performance more depth than a silly sci-fi horror like this deserved. He made Dr. Brewster sympathetic. Most of the other characters are likable too. It has a so bad it's good quality and Bela Lugosi deserved more attention for his amazing acting skill he had and not punish this movie for the many flaws it has. A bad bad bad movie, but there's something about it that's strangely appealing. (Not a recommendation) See more Oct 17, 2013 Lugosi with LOTS of hair--Going Ape in Hollywood Circa 1943 Bela Lugosi style!! See more Mar 11, 2012 Nothing too interesting. Bela Lugosi looked more like a werewolf than an apeman, and there's a lot of random scenes and boring murders. There's not really anything new to this film. See more Read all reviews
