The structure, editing, and sound maintain a palpable tension, while strong performances from the entire cast provide compelling depth and complexity. The most difficult aspect was identifying with Antoine and Olga; even against my own instincts, I kept finding myself adopting Xan’s point of view instead. Why had they uprooted from France to insert themselves here, and why did they stay? While the film is comfortable leaving much unseen, some backfill on them would have helped. I did become more invested after the climax, with the shift to Olga. She always felt like a grounded presence, and her purpose is much clearer by that point. That transition, btw, is handled beautifully. Leaving you hanging—wondering what happened and how much time has passed—is an organic way to mirror her internal journey before arriving where she ends up. Seen this movie several times before; different titles, but the story is not particularly different, more psychologically telling, or carries any real fresh approach to the theme of the small-minded and intolerant brutes who will go to extreme lengths to justify their pettiness and resentment. The acting is solid, and it's a visually impressive film. Still, nothing new or esp. interesting for me. Though there was some potency to the ending, as Olga tells the news to the mother of her husband's enemies that she too will be alone now. 3.3 stars See more bill f @BrokerBill Oct 19 Superbly acted, especially from lead Denis Ménochet and “baddie” Luis Zahera, with a fine script. Does drag on a bit at times and you feel it never quite gets to the point. However, definitely worth watching if only for the fabulous confrontations between the two rivals.
