The back and forth between the grim pandemic drama and the surrealist song and dance numbers is kind of perfect. I read somewhere that the director's reasoning for the musical sections is that without them, the movie would just be too grim and despondent. It's kind of crazy how prophetic this movie ends up being about the COVID pandemic (or maybe it's just all pandemics are like this). The hoarding of toilet paper, the outbreak being called [insert country name here] flu, the social isolation, everybody kind of losing their minds a bit. It's all really accurate. If I'd watched this during the actual pandemic, it probably would've messed me up quite a bit, would've hit hard. The framing on some of the shots is very cool too, really artfully done. And even though it's super slow and almost nothing happens, that's kind of not the point. It's more about the sense of it, the feeling of it, you're sort of living... A plumber created a hole in a man's apartment and the man and his neighbour began to suffer from the delusions and hallucinations of the effect of the disease. The hole represented the depression in a socially planned urban environment, everyone fills it with different methods. The hole is also a musical that juxtaposed the depression with cheerful tunes.
