Critics Consensus

While The King is sometimes less than the sum of its impressive parts, strong source material and gripping performances make this a period drama worth hailing.

The King is so laden with the trappings of profundity and prestige that in the end, it smothers itself to death. Go to Full Review

The plays are about [Hal's] youth and immaturity - his unreadiness to be king - and Chalamet captures that impetuousness. Go to Full Review

Almost everything about The King works brilliantly, from the casting (not least Robert Pattinson as a deliciously detestable Dauphin) to the generally cracking script by Michôd and Edgerton. Go to Full Review

Kings and kingship are not in themselves such a fashionable subject for audiences today, but the question of good leadership and how to govern is as relevant today as it has always been, and will not go away. Go to Full Review

“The King” does a good job reinventing Shakespeare’s characters and using them to offer up a meaningful critique of imperialism and the politics of war. Go to Full Review

Joshua B @WildSquirrel 12h The medieval battles are staged almost like a cricket match: leaders surveying the field, reading the conditions, and plotting how best to use the terrain to their advantage. The quieter moments at the campsites are intimate, and you feel as though you’re alongside the soldiers. This could have been a great film if not for Robert Pattinson’s jarringly off‑key performance. There’s an obvious irony in casting a French actor as an English king and an English actor as a French prince, and only Timothée Chalamet makes this work. There’s a near laugh‑out‑loud moment when King Henry speaks French more fluently than the Dauphin and is promptly asked to switch back to English. Aside from that misstep, the story feels genuinely epic in scale, and the twist in the final act is well earned. Sean Harris is great; his grounded, calming presence draws you in, much as it does for Henry V himself. See more Victoria A @Victoria_A 23h Great acting. Dialogue was quite Shakespearean though Falstaff was a lot less fun. Grittier take on Henry V. See more Chris P 4d Fantastic movie that was well written with a great cast. Soundtrack also really made this movie. I"ve watched it several times now and it will be one of those yearly movies that i will come back to. See more Matthew P. @Filmcritic123 4d Overall felt bored and not engaged in the story. The cinematography is good. The draw back to me were none of the characters were likeable or relatable which made it hard to root for anyone. Could have used a little comedy imo all serious little fun.
