Rare T @RT00283363 10/31/2024 The huge budget for this film is well-reflected in its different elements; the sets, the costumes, the instruments, the special effects that were ahead of their time, the music and numbers… Even the comedic sketches which do not impress some, are actually funny, and one has to account for all the years that have passed ever since where these jokes were repeated and became labeled as clichés, while they might have not been so back then. King of Jazz a great portal to the revue era which also features the first cartoon to ever be shot in technicolor. Just sit back and enjoy the music. The acts were very uneven, although one of the sketches in this revue is bound to appeal to all tastes. However, despite an attempt to hold it all together by Paul Whiteman, it doesn't work, and we are left with many individual musical presentations. While its contribution to history is great, its immediacy as a film falters, as evidenced by the poor box office and lack of public acclaim. Halfway through, I realized that this is where the nuns got their ideas for the year-end shows they inflicted on us. An historical artifact indeed and very nicely restored. Nice to see it on the big screen as those few who saw it early on during the depression. Scary to see such a white-washed version of the origins of jazz. What goes around, comes around? I hope not. See more 07/08/2015 Fortunately, the history of jazz was little troubled by this farcical musical travesty. The one black person who appears is a cute little girl sitting on the lap of Paul White-Man, the purported king of jazz. The only jazzy number in the film is 'Happy Shoes' with the entire remainder of the film devoted to middle of the road popular music and pseudo classical Gershwin. That said, the film, however distasteful, dated and unfunny, is in some ways an important historical predecessor of the Hollywood musicals to come. See more Read all reviews
