TheFilmCritics @TheFilmCritics 1d Some haunted houses are best appreciated for their architecture, and Thirteen Ghosts makes a compelling case for that philosophy. Its gleaming glass mansion, occult machinery and grotesquely designed spirits—especially the nightmarish Jackal—give the film a vivid visual identity and plenty of pulpy charm. Matthew Lillard supplies manic energy, while Tony Shalhoub brings welcome emotional weight to the family drama. Unfortunately, the human story rarely matches the supernatural spectacle, with thin characterization, clunky exposition and dialogue that often feels engineered to usher everyone toward the next scare. More interested in shock, style and grisly invention than sustained dread, the film can be silly and uneven. Yet its lavish production design and memorable ghosts make this a satisfyingly macabre haunted-house ride, provided you leave expectations of deeper horror at the door. This is a question I personally never entertained, but apparently for someone at Warner Brothers this was an irrisistible hypothetical. Thirteen Ghosts is an absolute shitfest of a mess, full of pointless slowmo, jump cuts, meaningless characters, and a kindergarten-tier plot that is as close to non-existent as to be the thirteenth ghost itself. I won’t watch it again it’s not a film that gripped me that I’d enjoy it but I’m glad I gave it a try. Really just isn’t my style of movie.
