What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's undeniably shallow, but its cheerful lack of pretense -- as well as its grand scale and star-stuffed cast -- help make Around the World in 80 Days charmingly light-hearted entertainment.

Outstanding in the long part of Mr. Fogg's faithful valet, Passepartout, is Cantinflas, a sad-faced comedian with a delightful economy of gesture and expression, who adds just the right note of implausibility to the whole highly improbable affair. The wonder is that this Polyphemus of productions does not simply collapse of its own overweight; but, thanks principally to Showman Todd, the picture skips along with an amazing lightness. Go to Full Review Variety Staff Variety Jan 28, 2008
With a smash lineup of stars in major and minor parts, Todd has turned out a surefire hit. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Feb 22, 2025

This adaptation of the Jules Verne novel has its moments, but infinitely more interesting than what appears on screen are the stories surrounding its maker. Go to Full Review Mark Johnson Awards Daily Jun 27, 2023
An elongated, swollen film, somehow both frantic and plodding, with more cameos than substance, 80 Days is an extravaganza with little to do other than entertain. But it knows that and isn’t really trying to be anything else. Go to Full Review Dilys Powell Sunday Times (UK) Aug 9, 2022
Around the World in Eighty Days is like a serial; a serial in brilliant Technicolor and a system by now called, I believe, Cinestage, ending in the most ingenious credits I have ever seen. It is a journey through scenes where the sun is aways shining. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Robert P @Superbad Sep 3, 2026 I'm surprised this movie actually won an academy award but I enjoyed it! See more Blobbo X @Blobbo May 29, 2026 Passes the time. A lot of time. Too much time! See more mark G @Mark_Alan_G. Mar 4, 2026 Think Bruckheimer or Tony Scott making films in the 1950s. Visually stunning and popping cinematography, with zero in the way of storytelling and character development. Outside Cantinflas, all the other stars are phoning it in, but they had little to work with. This is a cliched movie that should have been much better, but it didn't really try, it just wanted you to look at what the 2nd and 3rd units shot. Eye candy, nothing more. See more Christian K @ckacar Jan 13, 2026 There's a charming story somewhere in here and the narrative and performances are silly to match (compliment). But the runtime is loaded with filler scenes as they travel from country to country. Like extended Spanish dance and bullfighting scenes, Indian burial sequence, Geisha performance, and maybe hundreds of scenery, boat, and train shots. All the portrayals of regions and people are basically caricatures. See more alan g @agenser Apr 24, 2025 A very good adventure film. David Niven as the quintessential English Gentleman plays perfectly. Cantinflas at his comedic best and Crazy Shirley at her most beautiful. Great supporting cast.
