Dec 31 I love this film I can't believe the negativity directed at it. Clever story and great performances. The three main leads (Collet, Lithgow, Nixon) are invested and strong. Most of the criticism seems to be that they don't find the story realistic. Uhh, it's a movie! I think following War Games probably hurt it as people viewed it as too similar in nature. However, this film is more than clever on it's own. Add to this the beautiful scenery of upstate New York. This is good escapist fun. See more Claudio C @Claudio666 08/01/2025 The Manhattan Project (1986) One of the Worst Movies From the 80’s (11,869 – 01 Aug 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) Scientist John Mathewson (John Lithgow) and his team research a process to refine plutonium to almost 100%. He is transferred to a better laboratory in Ithaca and when he rents a house with the divorced real estate agent Elizabeth Stephens (Jill Eikenberry), he feels attracted to her. John meets her teenage son Paul Stephens (Christopher Collet) and invites him to visit his laboratory. Paul is a prankster and a brilliant student and decides to break into the laboratory later, with his girlfriend Jenny Anderman (Cynthia Nixon), to steal plutonium and build an atomic bomb to win the science fair. But his irresponsible act brings havoc to the town. “The Manhattan Project” (1986) is one of the worst movies from the 80’s. The flawed plot has a stupid scientist in the lead role performed by John Lithgow. The man brings a teenager to a classified facility to get into the pants of his mother. Paul Stephens is a irresponsible and reckless teenager, capable of breaking into a laboratory to rob plutonium. Then he exposes his mother, his girlfriend and other teenagers to the radiation and causing health risk to them to have a cancer. Laboratory security is a joke, allowing a teenager to handle the equipment. It is also impressive that there is no sniper capable of taking Paul down, especially because the teenager is unarmed and the bomb disassembled. The conclusion is ridiculous, with John Mathewson and Paul Stephens suffering no consequences for the acts. My vote is one (awful).
