Garnett’s shadowy direction is very gripping and imaginative for a film mostly set in one smal Lana Turner is fabulous as the lonely and horny housewife Cora Smith, who helps her older husband run a small diner. Her miserable femme fatale is delightful to watch as the conniving Cora. John Garfield is great as the new hire Frank Chambers, who falls in love with a married woman in the hopes of killing her husband for her favor. Cecil Kellaway was quite amusing as the amiable old man Nick Smith. Hume Cronyn steals all of his scenes as Cora’s slick lawyer Arthur Keats. He feels clever, like he’s always got something up his sleeve. Leon Ames is smart and shrewd as the district attorney Kyle Sackett. In short, The Postman Always Rings Twice is fascinating and fun. In the end the car over heats, the drunk man could have tried to drive the car and the man accused of murder could have tried to stop him leaving the girl.unscathed but they never touch that explanation they go right in to saying they know it was murder so....huge screw up in the plot. See more Mark B @Thelaser555 07/11/2025 A nasty little man meets a nasty little woman. They are two of a kind. Low-life, immoral and always looking for the main chance. They are both liars, cheaters, impulsive and bad tempered. Lana Turner as Cora, the sexy young siren who sap and drifter Frank Chambers (John Garfield) is immediately attracted to after being given the handyman job at an out-of-town diner by the rather clue-less but likeable owner Nick Smith (Cecil Kellaway) is the star of this Hitchcock-esque caper who quickly has Chambers wrapped around her little finger. It's the nasty Cora who drives the plan ever forward in killing her middle-aged husband so she can start a new life. She hadn't really planned on starting it with Frank Chambers, a hobo without a penny to his name, but she is inadvertently drawn to Garfield's macho persona like a moth to a flame. This classic film noire crackles with sexual electricity between Turner and Garfield and there are even glimpses (remember, this movie was made in 1946) of some risque moonlight swimming at some secluded cove. Talking of electricity. Cora flutters her eyelashes a few extra times to get Frank to pump around a 1000 volts of electricity into her husband's bathwater one night whilst he's enjoying a good singalong to himself in the tub. The pet cat also gets it as well. Suddenly they're like the lottery winners who don't know what to do with themselves. Cora wants to get rid of Frank, as he's become even more clingy and pathetic, but he won't leave their newly inherited diner for fear Cora will 'shop him' to the police. In the end, the old adage, what goes around always comes around, happens when Cora and Fred are driving back from one of their moon-lit swimming 'malarkies.' Brainless Frank takes his eyes off the road for just that extra second too long and crashes the car, killing Cora instantly. Oh dear. Now what Frank? The DA himself, who always had his suspicions about the mysterious death of the nice owner of the diner, has Frank arrested for the murder of Cora and the murder of nice Nick, dead Cora's dead husband. It's off to the gas chamber for Frank. It's an intriguing film about sex, money and greed. Highly watchable and Lana Turner is magnificent. See more Alain E @AlainE 06/28/2025 A nice crime melodrama. The two protagonists, the unfaithful young wife and the immoral drifter, take turns in breaking the law. The story development is not entirely justified. In the end moral justice is restored.
