Teen misfits Gary and Wyatt design their ideal woman on a computer, and a freak electrical accident brings her to life in the form of the lovely, superhuman Lisa. She outfits Gary and Wyatt in cool clothes, surprises them with a Porsche and helps them stand up to jerks Ian and Max. But, all the while, the boys must hide Lisa's existence from Chet, Wyatt's nightmare of a big brother.

Critics Consensus

Hardly in the same league as John Hughes' other teen movies, the resolutely goofy Weird Science nonetheless gets some laughs via its ridiculous premise and enjoyable performances.

It’s a silly sci-fi sex comedy, but there are amusing moments to warrant revisiting.

The premise here threatens puerile perversion, female exploitation, and an uncomfortable age gap... – but in fact Hughes gives Lisa the confidence, agency and power that the boys lack, and makes her more fairy godmother than sex object.

The movie is the latest in the "Wouldn't it be neat if . . .?" school of movies.

...watching the film with the fact that it’s close to 40 years old, it is more than watchable, it’s enjoyable for most of the runtime.

Weird Science describes itself as *a special effects comedy*... it comes across more as a feeble blend of tediously vulgar, stale half-baked ideas.

It verges on being conceptually terrifying at times, as well as narratively thin and amateurish, but Hughes hasn't yet exhausted his humour, heart and boyish good will, so it's made slightly better to swallow. It is wisely spirited and fast-paced, with an electric Oingo Boingo single and inventive special effects.

Not on par with John Hughes’ more famous works, but still entertaining if you don’t mind the silliness. There’s a couple of funny scenes here and there, so it’s entertaining enough for a one-time watch.

Two people, Anthony Michael Hall and Bill Paxton, are giving virtuoso performances. This movie really feels like it was thrown together over a weekend bender, I can't believe its real and a studio signed off on it.
