This war drama depicts one of the biggest events of the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg. The massive three-day conflict begins as Confederate General Robert E. Lee (Martin Sheen) presses his troops north into Pennsylvania, leading to confrontations with Union forces, including the regiment of Colonel Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels). As the battle rages on and casualties mount, the film follows both the front lines and the strategic maneuvering behind the scenes.

Critics Consensus

Gettysburg's reverent approach to history is balanced with the committed work of a talented cast - and the hard-hitting dramatization of a bloody turning point in the Civil War.

Jerry G @RT24794294 1 day ago The beards are awful, but the movie does a great job of sticking closely to Shaara's novel — a movie this long really should, anyway. The performances from Berenger, Lang, Daniels, and Richard Jordan in his last role, are especially terrific. See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 6, 2026 Gettysburg = a *4* star Movie See more Michael W @mawilps Aug 2, 2026 This war movie was great. Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Stephen Lang, Richard Jordan, Sam Elliott, and the rest of the cast did a great job in this movie. This true story about the battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War was dramatic, intense, and tragic. It could've been better, but it dragged some. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's worth watching. See more Cody W @blindref Jul 13, 2026 Finally watched it and loved it! See more Lynne L @Lynne694 Jul 10, 2026 Drags on and on way too long. No story line except just shooting. Boring beyond words. See more Chris B @Papa13070 May 18, 2026 What a film! This one grabs you right from the start and keeps you. And it needs to-it's a long film. The film is fairly accurate, historically, and was shot partially on location. The performances of Martin Sheen as General Robert E. Lee and Tom Berenger as General James Longstreet are nothing to get excited about, especially during one scene where both of them deliver their lines very woodenly. Nearly everyone else in the film is great! The most galvanizing performance is that of Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Chamberlain. I'd have followed him into hell, which his men did. The battle scenes in this film are truly epic in size and the cinematography is brilliantly executed. When all those dozens of Confederate cannon fire one by one, it made me feel as if those cannonballs were headed for me. The soundtrack is spectacular. It is truly one of the great war films of all time. See more Read all reviews
