Matt (Chris O'Donnell) falls for Casey (Drew Barrymore), the new girl in school. She's fun-loving and eccentric, but there's a darkness to her whimsy that Matt can't begin to comprehend. When Casey attempts to commit suicide, her parents (Joan Allen, Jude Ciccolella) place her in a mental institution. Matt springs her out, and together the young lovers head on a road trip. They believe their love can cure Casey's problems. Matt starts to wonder, though, if are they inspired or misguided.

Critics Consensus

Mad Love tries to juggle mental illness with meet-cute, and the end result is a misguided rom-com whose sparks resolutely fail to fly.

Though well-acted by Chris O'Donnell and Drerw Barrymore, this is yet another version of amour fou and love on the run that makes little sense and fails to reach the heart.

The movie deals seriously with mental illness, and also with that overwhelming mental and physical condition known as being a teenager in love.

Almost dreadful enough to spark reassessment of Brooke Shields in Endless Love.

It's like several of MTV's "Alternative Nation" videos strung together, occasionally interrupted by dialogue.

Despite the old-fashioned ideology, at least Mad Love is good to look at.

Taking a trip back to the ’90s was such a fun ride, I really enjoyed every moment. I’m just a little sad I never fell that deeply for anyone else.
