For visceral thrills, it can't be beat -- just don't expect The Rock to engage your brain.

If you are prepared to remain intellectually unengaged, it's an enjoyable couple of hours.

The presence of Connery is pure balm, purring those Celtic tones like smoky single-malt Scotch.

The screenplay by David Weisberg and Douglas S. Cook (Holy Matrimony) and debut writer Mark Rosner is pulp fiction that requires the actors to shout a great deal, but the dialogue is decent given the rich tradition of adventure films.

As an example of mid-1990s American action cinema, it is honestly tough to beat.

It is, mostly, macho action nonsense. But it's macho action nonsense of the very highest order, and then some.

The Rock is pure, old-school action movie adrenaline Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage tearing into the screen with charisma, attitude, and just enough insanity. The direction is big, slick, and relentlessly kinetic, while the dialogue crackles with memorable one-liners and smart-ass chemistry. It’s loud, ridiculous, gloriously over-the-top, and exactly the kind of action spectacle Hollywood used to make when it had both money and a pair of brass knuckles.

Filled with cheesy one liners, but remains a fun watch.
