There is a chase sequence between Hallam and Bonham through the streets of Portland that begins promisingly enough, but soon becomes so ungainly I had no idea what was up and where was down.

This movie chooses action over a coherent narrative. The story consists of disjointed elements that fail to tie together the relentless scenes of violence. It seems like the movie had the potential to be great, but someone overlooked the importance of having a story.

I found The Hunted super gripping, stylish, ruthless, and exciting. Friedkin allows us to follow Benicio del Toro’s insane special ops assassin to see woodland traps, craft a serrated knife, sneak up on prey, and brutally strike his victims. I loved watching Tommy Lee Jones’ persistent survivalist and knife expert hunt down Benicio. It's neat how we get to see the visual clues that Jones is using to track Benicio path in the forest and town. Tommy Lee Jones is astounding in a mature and compelling hero performance as L.T. Bonham. You can tell he doesn’t want to hunt his student down, but he must kill this military killer. I think Jones is a cool action hero and very physical for an older actor. Benicio del Toro is scary and unhinged as the traumatized villain Sergeant First Class Aaron Hallam. His ferocious facial expressions and raging knife attacks are enthralling. Connie Nielsen is excellent as the careful FBI Special Agent Abby Durrell, who is in over her head on this bloody case.

Not sure why anything less than praise can be attributed to this brilliant film. Jones Del Toro are both great, outshined only by the beautiful natural forest shots. This is a man's movie, not for little girls.
