Aditya G @RT41025676 Aug 7, 2025 When it comes to meta humour, mainstream Bollywood rarely explores the genre — but AK vs AK breaks the mould. This is a clever, fast-paced black comedy-thriller that leans heavily on industry inside jokes and controversies. Viewers unfamiliar with Bollywood gossip may miss some of the best lines, but for those in the know, it's razor-sharp. The film builds on a real incident where Anurag Kashyap’s dream project Alwin Kalicharan with Anil Kapoor was shelved — a fictional feud grows from that in the story. Written by Avinash Sampath and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, the film uses a single visible camera that follows Anurag (played by himself), turning the camera into a character of its own. With no unnecessary songs and a tight runtime of 1 hour and 48 minutes, the story flows fast. Anurag plays a version of himself — arrogant and self-absorbed — while Anil Kapoor shines as the dramatic veteran actor. One brilliant meta moment includes the line: “Aisa real acting toh tera Nawazuddin bhi nahi kar sakta,” referencing Kashyap’s iconic work with Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The story begins with a public altercation, leads to media backlash, and evolves into a twisted real-time thriller where Sonam Kapoor is kidnapped and Anil has 12 hours to rescue her — all orchestrated by Kashyap himself. The layers of fiction and reality blend smartly. It’s a brilliant, self-aware film that deserves more attention, and its originality and smart writing make it highly rewatchable. See more Hemant S @RT50421404 Jun 27, 2023 A bit of an Indian "Bandersnatch" is this, but mainly in terms of it's tone. An innovative concept at least, and in the dark domain that Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane have always been good with – and I'm glad they have stuck with it. This is definitely not for the conservative viewers, as it is raw and full blooded with free flowing expletives, as the situations would deem. A fictionalized account of an ego clash between Anurag Kashyap and Anil Kapoor in a parallel universe (or is it?), the story arc cuts paths along several real life personas including their own families. Not new to being in an acting role, Anurag does well as himself – possibly channeling himself for most parts of the plot. The stress and tension can be felt in most of the scenes. I only wished the scuffles were a bit more realistic, but they do have an air of hilarity about them – like kiddish wrestling. Anil Kapoor is convincing as he grinds through the city with the other AK; and especially in a self-roasting part. There is of course, the nostalgic reference to "Allwyn Kalicharan" (another AK?) a film that the director had pitched to the actor but never got rolling – of course, back when Anurag Kashyap started swimming against the tide (and he still is). Ample references to nepotism, roasts and an awesome "Lakhan" moment in the spirit of Christmas. Well worth the watch for connoisseurs of crazy Kashyap/Motwane collaborations – and a pair of badass, MoFo AKs going at it with sleeves rolled up. See more Jan 3, 2021 Conceptually had a lot of promise but like all Vikramaditya Motwane's stuff, it lacks a certain finishing around the edges and ends up being superficial and self indulgent. Some scenes went on too long and in the context of the film, didn't seem required. Also, a few plot holes / questions exist. See more Read all reviews
